"Hello All The Irish Men's Shed Association have been given a very generous offer from a company who are willing to cover the costs for a Shedder to be a part of the Niall Mellon Township Trust which this year is to be a Mandela Tribute School Building Blitz in Eastern Cape, South Africa, during November 2014. Participating in this exciting initiative would usually entail a lot of fundraising and a contribution to building materials, so to have been given this opportunity is very exciting and we are delighted to be able to offer it out to our members. We are therefore planning on running a competition to see who will be that lucky person. This is open to all Shedders, being skillful is not a necessary criteria as labourers are just as valuable as skilled workmen. The only two requirements are that the participant has a valid passport which must be valid 6 months from the departure date from South Africa and that they have no issue being Garda Vetted with a view to receiving full Garda clearance prior to departure. As part of our competition, we are looking for our Shedders to make a pitch as to why you deserve this opportunity. These can be written essay style (2 full pages please) or as a voice or video recording lasting no longer than 3 minutes (on your phone is fine, keep it simple!). These pitches should be returned to us by 5pm on Friday 13 June 2013 at the very latest. They will then be judged and the successful person will be notified as soon as possible thereafter and their details published on our website. Best of luck to you all!" The National Conference of The Irish Men's Association will be held in the GMIT Castlebar on the weekend of Nov 15th/16th/17th with the main events being held on the Saturday Nov 16th in St Mary’s Hall., GMIT. 10am-5pm This is a gathering of all the sheds of the country and it is estimated that 300 upwards will attend the event. Men travelling from the four corners of the country will gather to share experiences, exhibit projects, partake in the “Pallet Challenge” and join in the activities of the day. Guest speakers include, Micheal O Muircheartaigh, Sean Coughlan from Social Entrepreneurs Ireland and Maghus Colin’s from Sand To Snow Adventurers. There will be performances from Kilorglin Mens Shed Choir and Armagh Sheds Drama Group. Local and national organisations holding stands on the day include, Pieta House, Mayo Mental Health, the HSE, South West Development, Teagasc, Rock Rose House, Volunteer.ie, Le Cheile FRC, BHP Insurances, Spec Savers, Mc Quillan Tools. The Irish Heart Foundation will provide free health checks on the day. It is very important to stress that this event is not exclusively for men. On the contrary there will be something for everyone on the day, from viewing the projects of the various sheds to drama , music and entertaining and inspiring speakers. There will also be an evening Banquet at the Harlequin Hotel on Saturday evening at a cost of €20 per person. Please contact the hotel directly if you would like to attend. St. Vincent de Paul Spring Newsletter 2013 , check out the article about men's sheds on page 8 The Annual General Meeting of the Irish Men’s Sheds Association will take place on the 1st of December 2012 at 11.00am in the Killarney Men’s Shed. The AGM will be an important event given the growth of the Men’s Sheds Movement in Ireland over the last 12 months. We encourage every Men’s Shed to participate at this meeting so that we can continue to develop as instructed by our grassroots membership. Please send the details of those who will be representing your men’s Shed at the AGM to [email protected] as soon as possible and by 5.00pm on Thursday the 8th of Novemeber at the latest. Due to the growth of the numbers of Sheds across the Island of Ireland and in line with our core values of equality and inclusiveness there has been some changes proposed to the goverenence structure of the IMSA. Following the AGM it is envisaged that the board will consist of 12 members made up of three members from each of the four proviences. The board members will be elected for a three year term with a minimum of one third of the board stepping down each year. So with these circumstances in mind and with the geographical spread of those who were elected last year the IMSA is seeking nominations to it’s board from it’s membership of suitable qualified experienced individuals from both Connacth and Ulster. There are no vacancies on the board this year for those from Leinster or Munster. To download a form to nominate an individual to the board of IMSA click here. Only Men’s Sheds that are registered to IMSA can propose or second a nomination. During the elections at the AGM each registered Men’s Shed will recieve one ballot paper per election.
A small number of places for observers, who are not members of the IMSA, will be made available for those wishing to attend. If you are not an IMSA member and would like to attend please register your interest immediately by emailing [email protected] IMSA is very greatful to the men of the Killarney Shed for facilitating this meeting.
